Mostyn Terrace, Bishop Auckland – Case Study

Situation

Ventilation is needed in a property to increase the air flow, which reduces the risk of mould, condensation and rising damp. Challenges on this project included:

  • Interior of the property
  • Wiring of the property
  • Window material

Other challenges on this project involved finding a suitable location within the property to install ventilation measures. For example, when fitting extractor fans, we must be mindful of minimising the disruption to the homeowner, which at times means venting the fans through the roof space.

Activity

We installed an extractor fan and trickle vents in this property. Trickle vents are critical to maintain the air quality, ensuring a constant flow of fresh air. To increase air circulation and prevent mould growth, door undercuts are completed to ensure the gap between the door and the floor is between 10mm and 22mm. It’s important to have these measures in place for the following reasons:

  • Indoor Air Quality: Having ventilation in your property helps remove pollutants like dust, pollen, odours and gases. This improves the air quality and health.
  • Health: Good ventilation can help to prevent the spread of infections like flu and COVID 19.
  • Building: Having poor ventilation can damage the building by causing condensation, mould and other issues.

Results

Having trickle vents in your property helps to prevent moisture from building up on windows and walls. They are a low-cost solution to improve ventialtion and indoor air quality. Operations director Adrian Veitch says, “Although this is a small amendment to their property, the improvement in the quality of the air has a large impact on the home.”
